Dental treatments have come on leaps and bounds since medieval times when toothache was a part of daily life for most, and there were no such things as fillings, the only option for most was to have the tooth pulled. Tooth extraction was not done by a professional such as Dentist like it is nowadays, it was usually carried out by the local barber or a charlatan in the marketplace who would profess to being a professional and then take the patients money and run after using a pair of forceps to remove the tooth, often leaving the patient in pain and bleeding. There was no such thing as a toothbrush either, this everyday implement which is used by most in this day an age, would more than likely have been a piece of old linen or a sponge.

Dentistry wasn’t thought of as part of health or medicine in the early 1700’s but by the latter of this century Dentists or tooth operators as they were called then were beginning to be deemed by many as necessary part of healthcare, unfortunately there were still many charlatans operating as only the wealthy could afford the expense of a professional dentist or tooth operator.

But this was all about to change up until 1800 and certainly before the middle of the 19th century Britain had very few dentists, there were probably about 60 in the whole of the United Kingdom. The demand for painless teeth was high and by 1879 dental schools were being set up in London. A law was put in place to prevent any charlatans or wrong doers from extracting teeth, and the introduction of pain relief to dentistry had an overwhelming affect, as people could actually have rotten teeth removed without the agony which used to come with it.

The rest is history, and today dentists and dentistry is an everyday part of life, most people brush their teeth twice a day and visit the dentist twice a year for a check up, and dentistry has moved on to such an extent that people now want and aim for the perfect set of pearly whites.
